SOPA and PIPA - what are the facts?

Due to the fact this has been postpone at the senate level - we won't be working on this post.  However, if you already completed it, I'll count it as "extra credit".

This week (Jan. 23 - Jan 27) in addition to the employment project you are going to RESEARCH the proposed bills, SOPA and PIPA, that have been all over the news this past week.  The purpose of the research is to find out what is the real truth is and what is propaganda.  You may have up to 90 minutes of class time to find and read your articles and gather your FACTS.   Anything you don't finish in the 90 minutes, is due for homework - due by Monday, Jan. 30.  You are to read the articles and take notes on each.  Save in Word to your P drive.  You may also upload to your iGoogle if you want to work on it at home. 


You must find a minimum of 4 current articles about this bills (2 for each). You must read each of the articles completely and you must post your URL's here in a comment along with your name.


Your articles must be from reliable and reputable sources - hint NOT Wikipedia. 


The following week, on Jan. 31, after you have found and read the articles, you are to use MS Publisher to create a ONE page flyer about the facts of SOPA and PIPA.

The purpose of the flyer is to INFORM the public about the true meaning of SOPA and PIPA. You must inform the reader about what is truth and what is not the truth. Basically you should take a truth and lie approach. For each lie you must state a truth.


Your flyer should be informational and truthful. Your flyer should draw the readers attention with a professional font, content and graphics. No more than 2 graphics can be used. You may use a page border to enhance the flyer.


The most important part of the assignment is to become WELL INFORMED about the issues.


Due Friday, January 27 - research, notes, and post on my blog is due.
Jan. 31 - you'll have the day in class to create your flyer. 

Adult Interview: Due Monday, January 30, 2012

Adult interview:  You are to interview two adults (over 30 years of age) about their jobs / career.  It could be both parents (mother and father), or a parent and another adult such as aunt, uncle, neighbor, etc. 

Questions:

1. What is their job title.
2. What are some of their responsibilities?
3. How do they use technology in their job?
4. What type of education was needed to obtain this job?
5. Was there any “on-the-job-training” in addition to formal education that was required?
6. How many hours do they work each day and how many days a week do they work?
7. Do they work overtime?  If so how are they compensated for overtime?
8. Dress code:  What is typical dress for workers and how do managers dress?
9. What are things they like about their job?
10. What are things they don’t like about the job?
11. Do they work in teams?
12. What is the starting wage for that type of job?  DO NOT ASK HOW MUCH THEY MAKE . . . it's rude!  You may ask the starting wage (it's a general question).
13. What type of benefits do they get if any?  (health care, paid vacation, sick days, stock options, bonus, other)
14. Comments – ask them if there is anything they would like to add about the job that we didn't think to ask?

Digital Story Reflection

Reflect also on what you learned about creating a digital story. 

1. Discuss how and why a storyboard is helpful. 
2. Discuss the advantage of writing your script before you begin recording. 
3. Discuss things you had problems with and how you overcame the problem. 
4. Last but not least:  discuss how a digital story could be used in English class, History class and Science class.
